-Notes: Burrowing owls reside in open dry grasslands and deserts of North and South America, primarily in the west, although also in the higher, drier parts of south central Florida. Small, plump, speckled brown owls with white eyebrows, no ear tuft feathers, yellow eyes and a short tail, these long legged owls differ from other typical owls in that they are diurnal (active during the day), the females are slightly smaller than males, and, as their name implies, they dwell in underground burrows that they either build themselves or inherit from ground dwelling rodents. Among owl species, burrowing owls are the most tolerant of non-threatening human activity, and are therefore the most likely to be seen. At only 9" long, in flight these small predators may be mistaken for doves or other small ground nesting birds. Second only to the barn owl in terms of their benefit to agriculture, these opportunistic feeders will eat small insects, reptiles and rodents. 1-part skull (jaw glued to cranium).
