Orangutan Skull (Bornean - male) Cast Replica - Pongo pygmaeus #BC-002B

-Size: 9&½"L x 6&½"W x 8"H

-Species: Pongo pygmaeus

-Notes: Bornean and Sumatran orangutans diverged about 1.5 million years ago and are classified as distinct species. Bornean orangutans, as the name suggests, originate on the island of Borneo and are divided into 3 subspecies. More numerous than the Sumatran species, they are still endangered with an estimated 20,000 remaining in the wild. Adult Bornean males have larger flanges of spongy tissue on either side of their face, called cheek pads, and a larger more pendulous throat sac, which serves as a resonator for their loud, roaring, territorial “long call.” The laugh of a large male orangutan is a low and highly resonating roaring sound, while that of the females and babies is more of a high-pitched squeak. Wild adult males can weigh up to 200 pounds and have an arm span of over 7 feet. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
