Unlike the smaller brown pelicans who dive from heights to catch their fish, a flock of white pelicans feeds by dipping their pouches in unison into schools of fish while swimming together in formation. This is believed to act as a target for aggression, sparing their delicate pouches from permanent injury, as the adults fight and compete for territories.
