-Size: 17"L x 10"W x 11"H
-Species: Metaxytherium floridanum
-Notes: This fossil dugong skull was found in the Lower Bone Valley formation (approximately 9.5-7 million years old) of the phosphate mines of Polk County, Florida, in 1978 by M. McClain. The most notable characteristic of the dugong skull is its deflected (down-turned) rostrum, an evolutionary adaptation to its role as a seagrass eater. An extinct sirenian, its modern relatives are the manatees and modern dugong (Dugong dugon). It's not known exactly why so few sirenian species exist today. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
